Hi, my name is Arnell Evans, and I am a Licensed Chemical Dependent Counselor and a Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist. I have worked for over 20 years in the fields of substance abuse counseling and co-dependency counseling. I specialize in working with women, adolescents, and groups. I also interact with clients and all licensed professionals in the field in addition to Licensed Chemical Dependency Counseling practices and procedures. I possess the skills and the talent to offer counseling in a fun, interactive, and engaging manner which appeals to teens. Through my innovative counseling practices, I assist teens in developing new coping strategies and leadership skills. In turn, these tools empower teens to navigate their daily lives and to overcome their inevitable challenges. I currently serve as Program Manager for Teen and Family Services and work with students at The Pro-Vision Academy Open Enrollment Charter School and Jones Memorial UMC, located in Sunnyside’s heart, currently known as the 3rd most dangerous community in the country. I was raised in a single-parent home with my grandparents when the Sunnyside community was safe to reside in. I am keenly aware of the lack of recovery resources available to inner-city adolescents and how critical having access to good recovery programs is to youth and their families. I have made it my mission to bring critical resources and peer recovery initiatives to a neighborhood voted as one of the nation’s toughest. I also serve as a Speaker for the Generation Found Film Documentary, which premieres across the world in September 2016 in selected theaters and soon on Netflix and Amazon. I am an integral part of the film, which specifies the lack of recovery resources in the inner-city areas of Houston and surrounding areas. Established trust plays a critical role when introducing new programs to inner-city neighborhoods, and powerful change occurs when transformation comes from within the community itself. Married for 18 years with five children and four grandchildren, I am an example for and trusted advocate of inner-city families who has been affected by the devastation of drugs and alcohol and have the desire to be healthy by staying clean and sober. “An addiction is an emergency when it becomes that individual’s crisis” is a quote that provides me with daily inspiration.
